Reasons to Air Seal Your Home
- Drafts - Air sealing your home stops cold air from entering into your home in the winter and warm heated air from escaping. Drafts in a home indicate excessively air leaks and infiltration. We air seal attics, walls, basement ceilings and exterior walls to stop drafts, discomfort and high energy bills. In addition to air sealing your home, we also install high grade weather stripping for exterior doors.
- High Energy Bills - When a home is leaky, it is allowing conditioned air to escape. Heating systems must work longer and harder to keep your home comfortable, costing you more year after year. Air sealing your home can save you up to 30% on your energy bills.
- Moisture Issues - Air moving through your home also transports moisture into building cavities which can lead to expensive repairs and other issues outlined in moisture control.
- Cold Rooms - Often people blame their windows for cold spaces in a home. In reality cold rooms can be attributed to a combination of poor insulation, air leakage, thermal bridging through solid wood window and door headers and poor window installation. In fact I know of one window company in Centre county who sells "code compliant" windows is still chinking fiberglass as an air sealing effort.
- Poor HVAC Performance - If your HVAC system runs continuously and does not provide the comfort levels you desire, your home might be too leaky for your HVAC system. We tested on house with a brand new $28,000 geo-thermal heating system. Although the geo-thermal system was properly sized for the size of the home and insulation levels, the HVAC contractor never completed a blower door test on the home to quantify air exchange rates to size the system.
- Excessive Dust - If you have cobwebs any where in your home, it is a symptom of air movement. Cobwebs is an accumulation of dust due to dirt being moved through the air in your home. Air sealing can help minimize excessive dust and improve the indoor air quality of your home when mechanical ventilation systems properly sized and installed.
- Ice Damming - Ice damming is can be caused primarily by warm air leaking into an attic and ineffective ceiling insulation. Air sealing stops warm moist air in the winter from entering your home's attic space and stops the snow from melting and forming hazardous and damaging ice dams on your homes roof.
